Hoe wordt een prijs berekend?
De prijs* van een illustratie bestaat uit 2 delen
1 maakprijs
Het honorarium van de illustrator: uurprijs x (geschatte) aantal uren.
2 licentie (gebruiksrecht)
Deze vergoeding wordt afgeleid van de aard, verspreiding en duur van het gebruik en zorgt voor het recht tot publicatie van een illustratie. Door de licentie kan de prijs van dezelfde illustratie variëren als het gebruik ervan verandert. Een kaft is bijvoorbeeld belangrijker dan een binnenillustratie van een boek en heeft dan ook een hogere vergoeding. Als de circulatie van een illustratie bescheiden is reken ik niets tot weinig voor deze vergoeding.

Niveaus illustraties
De maakprijs varieert per illustratie. Sommige illustraties zijn relatief snel te maken, andere hebben vooronderzoek nodig of bevatten veel en ingewikkelde houdingen of details.
Charitatieve projecten
2011: karakters voor werkbladen autistische kinderen
2010: kaft verhalenbundel over een lichamelijk gehandicapt meisje
2009: kleurplaat voor de Hartstichting
Eenmaal per jaar werk ik 10 uur gratis voor het goede doel. Ik geef dus ‘in natura’, bied mijn diensten aan voor een stichting of vereniging die illustratiewerk nodig heeft.
De voorwaarden:
- de illustraties dienen een charitatief doel te steunen. Dit kan van klein tot groot zijn, bijv. een inzamelactie voor vluchtelingen of een project om kinderen in Nederland veiliger op straat te laten spelen.
- het gevraagde illustratiewerk kan in totaal in 10 uur of minder worden gemaakt. Als ik over deze termijn heen ga, moet het restant worden bijbetaald. (de benodigde tijdsduur v.e. project wordt in het begin aangegeven)
- Bij het publiceren van het illustratiewerk wordt zover mogelijk mijn naam vermeld
- als ik na een opdracht voor het goede doel nog wat werkuren over heb kan ik deze binnen hetzelfde jaar aan een ander project schenken. Op deze manier is het mogelijk meerdere projecten per jaar te doen of de tijdsduur voor het komende jaar ‘op te sparen’.
Dus: kent u een goed doel wat wel wat fris illustratiewerk kan gebruiken? Stuur me een mailtje en geef aan waarom u denkt dat dit project illustratieve steun kan gebruiken! Wie weet wordt u dit jaar wel uitgekozen.
Voorbeeldwerk
Voor voorbeeldwerk dat (nog) niet wordt gepubliceerd vraag ik een pure maakprijs zonder basislicentie. De totale vergoeding valt hierdoor lager uit. U kunt naast een nette uitwerking kiezen voor schets of halfnet, deze bedragen 1/3de en 2/3de van de pure maakprijs.

How much will your project cost?
You want to know what your project will cost? Get in touch and ask for an offer. It’s also possible to send you a general schedule of prices to make a quick decision. The first consultation on location is for free (travelcosts excluded).
In which way is a fee calculated?
The fee* for a illustration had 2 parts:
1 production fee
The reward for the illustrator: hourly pay x (estimated) working hours.
2 license fee (right to use the illustrationwork)
This fee depends on the type, distribution and period of use of the illustration and takes care of the right to use an illustration. Because of the license fee the cost of the same illustration may vary if the usage changes. A cover for example is more important than an inside illustration of a book and therefore has a higher fee. If the circulation of the illustrationwork is modest, this fee will be small/non calculated.

Levels of the illustration work
The production fee varies per illustration. Some illustrations are relatively easy to make, others need preliminary research or include many or difficult poses or details.
Simple:
1 person/object in a solid or abstract background/no preliminary research needed
Medium:
1 to 2 persons/objects with background/none or little preliminary research needed
Complicated:
Many persons/objects with detailed backgrounds/preliminary research needed/a lot of details

Once a year I work 10 hours for a charitable project. I pay ‘in kind’, give my services to a association or foundation which needs illustration work or a story.
The conditions:
- the illustrations have to support a charitable objective. This can be a small or a big one, like a fundraiser for refugees or a project to let children in the Netherlands play more safe on the streets.
- the demanded illustration work can be made in 10 or less working hours. If I cross this line the extra hours must be payed for. (I calculate the required working hours at the beginning of the project)
- When the illustration work is published my name, if possible, must be mentioned.
- If I have extra working hours left after a project, I can use these in the same year for another project. In this way it’s possible to do several projects per year or to ‘collect’ the hours for next year.

Sample work
If you need sample work that won’t be published (yet) I only charge a production fee. The total fee of the illustration work will therefore be less. Aside from the final stage of the illustration you can also choose a sketch or half final stage of the illustration, the costs for these stages are 1/3 and 2/3 of the total production costs.
